Alma Chapter 38

Weekly Study Questions

What does this chapter teach me about God's relationship with His children?
What does this chapter teach me about my Savior?
How can I use the principles and examples from this chapter to improve my own relationship with the Savior and my Heavenly Father?

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS TO PONDER

We learn in this chapter that Shiblon endured many difficult trials "for the word's sake" and stayed faithful throughout those trials until the Lord delivered him. He seems to be a bit of an "unsung hero" in the Book of Mormon, although he set an incredible example of obedience and faith, according to his father, Alma. Who are some of the "unsung heroes" you've observed in your life to whom you look as an example?

In verse 12, Alma counsels Shiblon to "bridle all your passions, that ye may be filled with love." How does bridling our passions enable us to to be filled with love? Why is it that when we do not bridle our passions, this is impossible?

In verse 12, Alma also counsels Shiblon to "Use boldness, but not overbearance" in his teaching. What do you see as an example of using boldness without overbearance? How is this done?

  1. In answer to the first weekly question about what this chapter teaches me about God's relationship with his children, I think that Shiblon's life shows us that God will allow us to suffer because he knows that the ultimate happiness we could ever enjoys lies in becoming like him. It also teaches me that no matter how much we may be called upon to suffer, he will ALWAYS deliver us. That deliverance may come after this life, but it will come. This life is such a tiny blip on the grand scale of eternity. We can make it such a triumphant blip if we don't lose faith in that deliverance!
